How philanthropy is transforming cancer care and what comes next

Icon Cancer Foundation / 30 Apr, 2026

Philanthropic investment is helping expand access to one of the most promising frontiers in cancer treatment, with Icon’s growing cellular therapy program bringing new hope to patients across Australia.

Supported by Icon Cancer Foundation (ICF) and its donor community, the program is enabling greater access to advanced therapies such as CAR T-cell treatment, particularly for people with blood cancers where options can be limited.

Currently, CAR T-cell therapy is only available in the private health system through participation in clinical trials, making access to these studies critical for eligible patients.

Group Executive Research Manager Sophie Mepham PhD says cellular therapy is transforming what is possible in cancer care.

In recent years, a combination of major donations and community fundraising has supported every aspect of the program, from research infrastructure through to specialist roles that ensure these therapies can be delivered safely and effectively.

A $2.5 million donation from the Talbot Foundation is funding critical research infrastructure, supporting the delivery of advanced treatments and expanding access to clinical trials, particularly in cellular and novel therapies.

Philanthropic support has also enabled dedicated research leadership, including the role of Dr Karthik Nath, Icon’s Deputy Director of Cellular Therapy. Since joining Icon in 2024, Dr Nath’s international experience has helped attract global clinical trials and strengthen research capability in Australia.

Alongside this, community fundraising is playing a direct role in improving the patient experience.

Philanthropic investment has played a critical role in enabling this progress. It allows us to build the foundations – people, systems and expertise – that make it possible to bring global clinical trials to Australian patients.

A $265,000 fundraising effort led by the O’Brien family, together with ongoing support from Ray White New Farm, has funded a specialised Cellular Therapy Coordinator. This nursing role supports patients through complex treatments and clinical trials, ensuring continuity of care.

Community and Partnerships Manager Leanne Hardyman says the impact of donor support can be seen across the entire patient journey.

For donors, it’s incredibly meaningful to see how their support translates into real outcomes for patients,” Ms Hardyman said.

Whether it’s funding a clinical trial, a specialist role or critical infrastructure, every contribution is helping bring new treatment options closer to people who need them.”

ICF’s annual appeal will build on this momentum, supporting research, clinical trials and patient care initiatives that accelerate access to new treatments.

How people choose to get involved, whether by donating, partnering or sharing this work, they are helping bring new treatment options closer to patients.

Together, this collective effort is driving progress in cancer research and improving outcomes for people facing cancer today and into the future.
