The patient behind progress: Raylene’s role in advancing breast cancer care

Every person who joins a clinical trial contributes to the future of cancer care. While they may benefit from taking part themselves, their participation also helps answer important questions that can improve treatment for future patients. For Raylene, joining the PUMA clinical trial was a chance to turn her own breast cancer diagnosis into something positive – helping improve outcomes for future women diagnosed with breast cancer.

Raylene is participating in the PUMA clinical trial at Icon Cancer Centre Windsor Gardens, a clinician-led study funded by Icon Cancer Foundation (ICF) that is exploring how different radiation doses affect quality of life following treatment for early-stage breast cancer.

Her participation is helping Icon researchers answer important questions about breast cancer treatment that may improve care for women around the world.

Recently retired, Raylene enjoys staying active, travelling the world with her husband of 40 years and spending time in the kitchen. Together, they’ve visited all seven continents, with kayaking in Antarctica among their many unforgettable adventures.

Raylene’s story: Saying yes to research

Raylene credits her diagnosis to her own persistence. After noticing a lump in early 2025, initial scans found nothing concerning.  When the lump remained, she returned to her GP insisting on further investigation, which led to a biopsy confirming breast cancer.

Following her diagnosis, Raylene began treatment at Icon Cancer Centre Windsor Gardens, where she was introduced to the PUMA clinical trial by Radiation Oncologist Dr Scott Carruthers. For her, the decision to participate was simple.

“It was a no brainer to be involved,” she said. “It’s good to help where you can and research is the only way treatments will advance.”

For Raylene, participating in the PUMA trial has fit seamlessly into to her treatment, allowing her to contribute to research without adding to the burden of her care. It’s also given meaning to an otherwise difficult experience.

“I knew that the trial was an easy one to be involved with, so I had no concerns. I have found the trial to be totally convenient,” said Raylene.

“Being involved in the research has made a bad diagnosis feel like you are helping future women.”

Clinical trials rely on people like Raylene who are willing to contribute their time and experiences. Every participant helps researchers build the evidence needed to improve treatments, enhance patient experiences and shape future standards of care.
