At the heart of Sharron’s experience is a relationship that has shaped not just her treatment, but her life. For 30 years, she has been under the care of Icon Cancer Centre clinical haematologist Associate Professor James Morton who she describes as “incredible.”
“He’d be there at 10 or 11 o’clock at night seeing patients, then back again at 5 or 6 in the morning,” she said. “It would be unbelievable to know just how many lives he has saved or improved.”
Their connection is long. Over the years, Sharron has witnessed milestones in his life, just as he has supported her through hers. “I was his first private patient,” she says. “We’ve been through many things together.”
This sense of trust, continuity, and genuine human connection has been central to her experience and is a key reason she remains so deeply connected to the cancer community today.
Now the owner of a regional pub in Queensland, the Maryvale Crown Hotel, Sharron has channelled her energy into creating a vibrant, welcoming space. Running a pub, she says, is hard work, but it’s also full of life, laughter and connection. “I love the people. I love the life. It’s wonderful.”
It’s also the perfect setting for her next chapter – giving back.
“Because I’ve been so fortunate, you can’t help but feel it,” she explains. “If someone else could have a chance, and I could help – that’s what it’s about.”
